Tooth decay is the destruction of tooth enamel, the hard, outer layer of teeth. It is commonly observed problem amongst children, teens and adults. The bacteria in plaque produce acids that attack tooth enamel.

The stickiness of the plaque keeps these acids in contact with teeth and over time the enamel can break down. This is when cavities can form. https://www.mouthhealthy.org/en/az-topics/d/decay accessed on May 26, 2021

The appearance of white marks on surface of the teeth, are referred as white spot lesion. It may be an early sign of tooth decay.
It indicates an area of demineralization of enamel.
If not attended white spot lesions can progress to cavities

Poor oral hygiene, Lack of brushing, frequent sugar and fermentable carbohydrates intake, inadeqate fluoride, wearing appliances like braces and dry mouth are major causative factors for white spot lesions and tooth decay.

Use of remineralizing toothpaste or mouthwash, if indicated. If the lesion has advanced, your dentist may apply fluoride varnish application or restoration may be required.

Remineralizing agent supply calcium and phosphate ions, promote ion deposition into the tooth structure and helps in remineralization of the early carious lesion. Thus, such agents help in prevention and treatment of White Spot Lesions.
