Who is most likely to get a DVT? • Aged: People aged over 40 years • History: People who have had a previous history of DVT or PE • Existing health problems: recent treatment for cancer, recent surgery, especially on the pelvis, hips or knees • Hormonal changes in women: women who are pregnant or have recently had a baby or are on contraceptive pill or hormone replacement therapy (HRT).
• Genetic: Inherited clotting tendency or who have a family history of blood clots What are the common symptoms of DVT? DVT is di#icult to diagnose. The symptoms are
usually sudden (acute) and may include: •Pain and tenderness in the leg • Swelling in the leg (this is di#erent from the mild ankle swelling that many people get during
long-haul €ights) • Redness and / or discolouration in the leg • Being unable to bear weight (if the clot is in the leg). •DVT nearly always a#ects one leg only. If a
DVT is associated with a journey, these symptoms may develop hours or even days later. • Often, DVT may occur asymptomatically
Atrial Fibrillation is an irregular heartbeat or a condition in which the chambers of heart called as atria, fail to contract in a strong and rhythmic way. When this happens, the bodydoes not get enough oxygen-rich bloodthat is required for the normal sustenance.
Patients with atrial fibrillation present with varied symptoms like a “racing” heart, or feel fluttering sensation or have palpitations.Shortness of breath and lightheadedness may also be observed in some.
It is also important to know that few patients may experience no noticeable symptoms at all. Such patients may need to be diagnosed by an exam and an EKG by the physician.
Anticoagulants or the so-called “Blood Thinners”are medications which are given to reduce the risk of blood clot formation that can lead to a stroke or to treat an existing blood clot.
Take dabigatran exactly as prescribed by the doctor: Dabigatran should be taken with a full glass of water.Swallow the whole capsule. Do not break, chew or empty the contents of the capsule. Dabigatran can be taken with or without food.
The most important risk of atrial fibrillation is stroke. A patient is often at a 5 times higher risk of having a stroke as compared to another person without atrial fibrillation. This is because, when the heart is su#ering from atrial fibrillation as a condition, the blood can become static and pool inside the heart chambers called as atrium.
When the blood pools, clots form, which when pumped out of the heart can travel to the brain, block an artery in the brain, and cause a stroke.
