• Antibiotics are medicines that help stop infections caused by bacteria. They do this by killing the bacteria or by keeping them from copying themselves or reproducing.
• Every antibiotic is effective against certain types of bacteria.
• There are two main ways in which antibiotics target bacteria. They either prevent the reproduction of bacteria, or they kill the bacteria
• Antimicrobial Resistance (also commonly referred as ‘AMR’) occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites change over time and no longer respond to medicines making infections harder to treat and increasing the risk of disease spread, severe illness and death.
When you use antibiotics for the wrong reasons, such as:
Most colds and flu are caused by viruses against which antibiotics are NOT effective.
In such cases, you won’t improve your condition by taking antibiotics;
• When you use antibiotics incorrectly; For eg.
if you shorten/increase the duration of treatment, mis administrate the doses, don’t comply with the right frequency (Eg. Such as, taking the drug once a day instead of 2 or 3 times a day as directed by your physician). This would cause your body to not have enough medication to fight the infection and the bacteria will survive and may become resistant
•AMR is caused due to inappropriate use of antibiotics, mutation in bacteria, inadequate diagnosis and overuse in hospitals due to critical cases
• Antimicrobial Resistance is responsible for reducing the effectiveness of antibiotics to fight against infections. Failure to address AMR could result in prolonged illness, the need for more expensive medicines and financial challenges with almost 10 million deaths predicted worldwide by 2050.
Antibiotic resistance is accelerated by the misuse and overuse of antibiotics, as well as poor infection prevention and control.
Steps can be taken at all levels of society to reduce the impact and limit the spread of resistance:
•Only use antibiotics when prescribed by a qualified and registered medical practitioner.
•Never insist for antibiotics if your physician says you don’t need them
• Always follow your physician’s advice when using antibiotics
• Never share or use leftover antibiotics.
•Consume food which has been prepared hygienically and when consuming animal source foods, look for food packaging details such as indicating “antibiotic free” products
